Common Causes Of House Fires And How To Prevent Them
What’s most alarming is that home fires have become more dangerous and devastating recently because of the flammability of the materials in the house. Thirty years ago, you had on average about 14 to 17 minutes to escape a house fire, according to Consumer Safety Director John Drengenberg of Underwriters Laboratories (UL). “Today, with the prevalence of synthetic materials in the home, occupants have roughly 2 to 3 minutes to get out,” said Drengenberg. Fire testing conducted by UL has found a home with mostly synthetic-based furnishings can be entirely engulfed in less than 4 minutes. In as little as 30 seconds a small flame can become a major fire that ravages a home and threatens the lives of the people inside.

Outdoor cooking with grills, barbecues, grease friers, fire pits and wood stoves can all be a source of unwanted house fires as well. Be sure to position these tools away from the side of your home and nowhere near a wooden fence or any other highly combustible materials, and never leave them unattended while they are actively producing flames or heat. As the fire grows higher and hotter, more flammable objects and furnishings will ignite from spreading flames, including wooden cabinets and countertops, wallpaper, hanging baskets, and curtains. With the fire moving beyond the stovetop and other areas beginning to burn, a denser plume of hot air and smoke rises and spreads across the ceiling.
Communications breakdown left authorities in the dark and residents without alerts amid Maui fire, report says
According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking was—by far—the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States between 2015 and 2019, resulting in nearly half of all accidental house fires. So what happens in those first few minutes of a fire that allows it to go from manageable to out-of-control? This Old House has broken down the sequence of events in a typical kitchen fire to show how quickly the devastation can spread and how high temperatures can get. Follow along to learn how you can best protect your home, your loved ones, and your own life.
Heat from the fire radiates to other parts of the kitchen, heating up tables, chairs, shelves, and cookbooks. If you’re still in the room, this hot, smoky air can instantly burn the inside of your breathing passages. Plus, fires generate highly poisonous gases, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide (created when insulation, carpets, clothing, and plastics burn). Electric Ladyland includes a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", which became the Experience's best-selling single, reaching number six in the UK and number 20 in the United States. Firefighters were initially pouring water onto the flames burning in a rubbish yard to the rear of a row of buildings with commercial businesses on the ground floor and residential units above. The track was released as the lead single from Reload on September 13, 1999, and became a hit across Europe and Australia, reaching No. 1 in Iceland, No. 2 in Sweden, and the top ten in Australia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom.

A White House official told Business Insider that the respective offices involved in the program "are working diligently to ensure a smooth, safe, and timely transition" from the current fleet of helicopters to the VH-92. The VH-92's lawn-scorching problems were first discovered in 2018 during the Trump administration, kick-starting an effort to resolve the issue. Because of this unrelenting problem, the new VH-92 is only carrying White House officials or Secret Service personnel instead of the president himself and is restricted to landing on paved surfaces, the report said.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities arrested a second man Thursday in connection with burning down a home on Cleveland’s West Side. During the last meeting, Ghaben was asked whether he would preserve any historic artifacts from the house before the demolition. He said he would be willing to pull windows and doors and donate them, according to the village. On Wednesday, the village's Historic Preservation Commission is set to consider approval of the demolition of the house at 225 E. Four commercial units and the residential units above them sustained fire damage, according to LAFD.
days that rocked USC: How a derailed commencement brought ‘complete disaster’
If flames are visible from the outside when firefighters arrive, they immediately go into an aggressive attack strategy trying to ascertain if they can still safely save lives. Water simultaneously cools the burning debris (lower temps mean fewer flammable gases being generated) and can limit oxygen’s ability to fuel the fire. Firefighters may also vent off hot smoke and gases either by breaking open upstairs windows or cutting a hole in the roof. Spattered grease or oil residue on a dirty stovetop will ignite, causing flames to travel across the range.
Our house fire example starts on the stovetop since cooking fires account for almost half (44 percent) of all home fires. A few seconds is all it takes for a pot or pan to boil over the rim, spilling flammable oil-laden contents directly onto the cooking flame or red hot electric burner. In a few hundredths of a second, grease or other fatty substances ignite into flames. The flashpoint of many common cooking oils is around 600 degrees F, but when gas or electric burners are placed on high, temperatures can approach 1000 degrees F.
Standing in the afternoon chill, the man, Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla., threw pamphlets into the air before dousing himself with an accelerant and setting his body ablaze. The police hurried to extinguish the flames, and he was taken to a hospital burn unit, gravely injured. Candles, fireworks, decorative lighting on Christmas trees, matches, lighters and beyond can be culprits of dangerous fire accidents in and around your home without due diligence. Just like all open flames or combustible heat sources, these should never be unsupervised or unattended.
I love custom projects that allow me to make unique pieces even more. But, my favorite thing to do at Harp is to turn on the lathe- Bowls, bottles, candlesticks- anything on the lathe. Harp said the company is not accepting any new table orders, but there are a few items left for sale online. He will also be signing crafted items from the company until the last day of operation. Clint Harp, and his wife, Kelly, made the announcement on the official Harp Design Co.

Second, even if a store does specialize in harps, they may or may not have the specific string for your harp. AN INCORRECT STRING COULD DAMAGE THE HARP, AND YOU WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS. That was the day Clint met Chip Gaines — owner of a local construction company, whose wife Joanna was an interior designer.

I hope this article has been helpful as you consider buying your first harp. My main goal has been to impress upon you the idea that YOU are the most important factor in learning to play the harp. If your desire is to learn to play - keep your focus and your actions centered around learning to play and don’t get distracted by all of the harp options. Give yourself permission to noodle around with your eyes closed. Play a simple three or four note pattern and enjoy the soothing vibrations and wonderful sounds.

Rental harps are available to people living in the Southern California area. If you are considering playing the harp, this is a great way to try one out before purchasing.
Jerry outlines his Twelve Golden Rules of harpmaking, and he explains the harmonic curve in a way that everyone can understand. Chapter four includes what he calls The Great Soundboard Debate, explaining the pros and cons of using solid versus laminated wood for soundboards. This resource will easily save the novice harp maker the cost of the book many times over.
The rental harps are available for short term rental. Having a full set of levers gives you the most options but - don’t worry about it! You’ll find plenty of music that won’t require levers at all. If you are willing to spend 2 minutes to re-tune about 8-10 strings on your harp, you can play in the keys of G and D. Once that is done, you can play 90% of the folk and Irish repertoire. Also keep in mind that levers can be installed any time.
This is such a simple adjustment to make and yet we see people agonize over this. If you want to learn to play harp you are going to be so lost in the beautiful sounds you are making you aren’t going to be thinking about this. Unlike other stringed instruments, you can't go to a music store and pick up a "G" string for your harp. First, because music stores, unless they specialize in harps, don't carry harp strings.
On all harp charts, string #1 is the shortest (or highest pitch) string on the harp. These harps are also available to rent for television, film and photography for set dressing. As Fixer Upper became a ratings juggernaut, bringing in more than 2.1 million viewers an episode, Clint’s life hit warp speed. Orders went through the roof — and so did requests for him to speak at conferences and events.
I also rent to those visiting So Cal looking for a harp to rent during their stay. "I’m someone who’s always loved to talk to people, and now, there’s people who want to talk to me, and that’s great," he laughs. "I just hope the words I say add value to their life in some way — I really and truly hope that. God knows there’s enough negativity out there." Now, with a memoir about to hit stores, all he wants to do is inspire people to hang on.
For 45 minutes, they played and laughed, and tried to see the world beyond their empty bank account. They left the park almost hopeful — until they started to drive home. He was ready to follow his passion, and that was to make beautiful pieces of furniture people felt proud to own. The wood used on the body, neck, and pillar has a much more subtle effect on tone and it takes a very fine and trained ear to hear the difference between two like model harps in different woods. So I would suggest going with the wood that looks best to you. What are you happiest doing, when you’re not working?
No matter what size harp you end up with I promise you that you will be able to find a stool or chair that will allow you to play your harp comfortably. If the harp seems too short, set it up on a small box or find a lower chair. If your harp seems too tall, find a higher chair or stool.
If I could get Clint to build me anything, it would be a unique wooden vase or bowl. His skill and ease on the lathe is something I admire and maybe even envy a little bit.

His social media postings and arrest records suggest the immolation stemmed instead from a place of conspiracy theories and paranoia. The good news is that most accidental house fires can be avoided with proper education on the causes of house fires and how to practice fire safety. Identifying potential risks within your home and eliminating potential sources that could stoke and spread flames—heat, oxygen and fuel—can help lower the chance of a house fire. As the flames intensify, the smoke and hot air rising off the fire are more than 190 degrees F.

Greases, whether produced by food or cooking with oil, are highly flammable and can ignite even without direct contact with flames. Keeping your oven, stove and cookware clean of grease and debris buildup can prevent spontaneous combustion. If a grease fire does occur, do not try to extinguish it with water, as this could cause the hot grease to explode. Similarly, heaters that require fuel, such as kerosene or a gas fireplace, can be extremely dangerous and at risk of explosion if not properly maintained; chimney fires and flue fires are common accidents that are highly preventable with vigilance.

We break down the sequence of events in a typical kitchen fire to show how quickly the devastation can spread. In early 2021, the Department of Defense's operational testing and evaluations office determined that "the damage was found to be primarily due to engine exhaust, auxiliary power unit exhaust, and discharge of aircraft fluids onto the grass." The new Marine One helicopters, part of a program that the US spent $5 billion on, still can't carry President Joe Biden because there's still a risk they will scorch the White House lawn, according to a new report. The VH-92 Patriot is landing only on paved runways for now, flying missions with White House officials or Secret Service staff instead of carrying President Joe Biden. The problem is down to an issue first identified in 2018 — the helicopter’s spinning rotors and engine exhaust sometimes scorch the grass where it lands.

According to Glenn Gaines, the Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator, fires kill more Americans each year than all natural disasters in the United States combined. And even if individuals are spared, fire can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage—up to $50,000 to rebuild a kitchen engulfed in flames. It only takes 30 seconds for a small flame to turn into a full-blown life-threatening fire.

Remember to let these items cool completely before storing them away, keep them clean of crumb and grease buildup (both inside and outside the appliance) and keep them unplugged and in the off position while not in use. The kitchen presents myriad flammable factors that should never be left unattended or unsupervised while cooking, especially on the stove or oven. By the time a fire occurs, it is highly dangerous and difficult to extinguish. On some records you hear all this clash and bang and fanciness, but all we’re doing is laying down the guitar tracks – then we add echo here and there, but we’re not adding false electronic things. We use the same thing anyone else would, but we use it with imagination and common sense. It’s constantly changing dimensions, and up on top that lead guitar is cutting through everything.
Heating
Oil residue on cooking utensils also ignite, and other combustibles like paper towels, paper or cardboard packaging, and dry dish towels nearby will begin to smolder or burn. Smoke—a deadly cocktail of hot gases, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water vapor, hydrogen sulfide and unburned hydrocarbons (i.e., ash or soot)—rises up off the flames with the heated air. Many common household chemicals, including gasoline, are highly flammable if kept or used with improper caution. These should be stored in their original containers (with the warning and proper use labels intact), and sealed properly at all times. Keep chemicals and gasoline far away from heat, electrical sources, furnaces, pilot lights and other chemicals with which they could cause flames, including grease.
Flames pour through the doorway into the neighboring living room, setting the carpet and upholstered furniture on fire. Synthetics like polyurethane and polyester foam in sofas, pillows and carpets release tremendous amounts of heat. Back in the kitchen, the blaze has penetrated the wall and ceiling and flames travel quickly through unseen structural vertical shafts in interior walls and horizontal shafts between floors. Welsh singer Tom Jones recorded a version of "Burning Down the House" with Swedish pop band the Cardigans for his 1999 collaborations album, Reload. In common with the other tracks on the album, the recording was made with the collaborators' choice of producer and studio, in this case Tore Johansson and Tambourine Studios in Malmö, Sweden.
Candles should be placed on a non-flammable surface at least 12 inches away from other flammable items and kept away from playful children or accidental knocking over, and never left aflame while sleeping. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment are a leading cause of home structure fires and are often the result of inadequate, loose or faulty electrical connections. Short circuits, loose or sparking connections, poorly installed, old or overheated wires, circuits and lighting fixtures that are improperly matched to the current are all risk factors that could easily be missed by the untrained eye. Small grease fires may be extinguished with a fast response of turning off the heat, smothering the fire with a metal lid or sprinkling baking soda or salt on the flames.
Here are the top five causes of house fires and how to prevent them from happening to keep you and your home safe. When the smoky layer inches down to the top part of a doorway, an open window or a vent, it quickly streams out of the room. Then the poisonous smoke and heated air travels through hallways and up stairwells to the second floor. "Kickstart My Heart" is about all the ways Motley Crue gets their blood flowing without drugs. It was inspired by their bass player Nikki Sixx, who claimed he had to be revived with a shot of adrenaline to the heart after an overdose. "The program is studying solutions," the GAO said, noting that those included certain "aircraft design changes, lawn surface treatments, and operational procedural changes to minimize landing zone risks."
In September of 2023, commemorating the film's 40th anniversary, a remastered version was released across America in IMAX theaters, and later in conventional theaters worldwide. Heating devices are highly combustible and should never be left running unattended. Always read and follow the instructions precisely for any type of heating device and routinely check that it is in good condition before use.
Given the high temperatures of large fires, most if not all of the home furnishings may be rendered unusable. The type of construction materials used to build your home will influence the severity of damage. Synthetics like polyurethane, polystyrene, and PVC used in glues, insulation, and plumbing will auto-ignite at temps between 850 and 1075 degrees. At 1000 degrees F, steel plates used in engineered roof trusses will start to buckle and they lose 40 percent of their load-carrying capacity. Newer homes built with engineered wood can experience floor collapse in as little as 6 minutes. "Burning Down the House" is a song by new wave band Talking Heads, released in July 1983 as the first single from their fifth studio album Speaking in Tongues.
Everything in the room bursts into flames—wood dining table, wood and upholstered chairs, cookbooks, curtains and wall decorations. The oxygen in the room is virtually sucked out (used up during the rapid combustion); glass windows shatter. The upstairs fills with thick, hot, noxious smoke and the stairwell is impassible. When you have flashover in a room, temperatures can reach up to 1,400 degrees F—now, all of the other rooms in the house are severely at risk.

The tiny home was built to withstand brutal New England winters. “Anyone who wants to build or live in a tiny home should have a plan for land—both building and parking. steps to nail your cottagecore house interior vibe
With nature as central, sustainability and being in harmony are hugely important. Making your own food and ideally growing it yourself is cottagecore to it’s core. The cottagecore look is a mix of country cottage and farm chic. It’s about creating a cozy, nurturing life, and as much about things you do to bring a sense of wholeness and calm to your life as it is about what you put on your walls or shelves. Hang bunches of dried herbs and meadow flowers and use foraged finds such as tree branches as decoration.
Tip: White is your weapon
Whether you choose a pale, muted, or rich, deep green, this color is the perfect accent almost every time. Use green on feature walls, accent furniture, drapery, and tabletop decor. The cottagecore style is anything but boring, and vintage-style wallpaper is an element of this aesthetic with endless possibilities.

What is the cottagecore aesthetic and why did it become popular?
If not, here’s your time to pick one out that perfectly fits your cottagecore space. They are simply small cottage-like homes with modern decor. Portable buildings or prefabs are turned into cottages due to their size.

To really nail the homegrown aesthetic, you may have to put your crafting, gardening and baking skills to use, as pointed out in Emily Kent's The Little Book of Cottagecore. So, if you're looking to stop and smell the roses, break out your embroidery kits, knitting needles, pie weights and herb garden kits, stat.
Use whimsical floral prints
Vintage porcelain drinkware with dainty designs are easy to find, but make sure the set isn't broken or cracked before deciding on a purchase. Grain & Frame advises against putting any direct heat on the surface since it could warp the wood or cause cracks. If a wooden table is near windows, cut the blinds or curtains to prevent direct sunlight or heat from damaging the wood. Spilt food and drinks should be cleaned up from the table and homemade solutions are a good way to cleanup. It’s just the latest iteration of an age-old nostalgia for an agricultural life that humans routinely long for when human invention or social change accelerates the pace of modern life. The Arts and Crafts movement of the 19th and 20th centuries was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and Victorian-era opulence.
An antique rug can create an unconscious boundary for your cozy corner. Blankets, candles, and fairy lights can turn a once-unused space into your favorite place to whittle away the evening. Choose your colors depending on how well they brighten up your space. How you style your Cottagecore house will vary depending on your tastes and whether you want to turn it into a homage to the Cottagecore lifestyle or just want to bring some of your favorite elements in.
Freshly cut flowers also give the illusion of having just ventured into your cottage garden to pick your sweet-smelling blooms. Instead, Cottagecore is all about romanticizing rural living, even if it’s not a realistic representation of what it’s like to live in a real cottage. Bring natural elements into your home with plants, dried flower and herb bouquets, and nature-centered prints. It is the perfect way to create a relaxing escape full of cozy features with vintage-inspired decor. The ground floor includes an open-plan kitchen and dining area, old-style farmhouse pantry and a bight orangery, with colourful decor and views over the gardens.

At the heart of these transformations — from minor DIYs to big rebuilds — is the very idea that our homes should be a safe, cozy and inviting space that provides a respite from the outside world. Shelterness points out that adding wicker baskets to the mix not only provides a subtle design, but could also be used to organize various products. For guest bedrooms, keep a basket of magazines near the bed for easy pickings and reading, and use them in bathrooms to hide toilet paper or beauty products.
Use pastels and bright colors complimented with soft colors. Cottagecore can heavily feature white, but it can also have shades of blue, yellow, pink, or green. Some vintage cottagecore designs feature bathrooms with bright tiles and colored fixtures contrasted with simple cream kitchens that boast plants and other colorful accents. There are many different directions that you can go in with a cottagecore color pallet. Make sure you are using complimentary colors, and ideally, you would use soft colors, but there is a lot of wiggle room for customization and personalization with colors in a cottagecore house.

Although, not a new aesthetic, Cottagecore has boomed over the last few years. Perhaps in part, thanks to the pandemic, which left many of us wanting to escape the uncertainty and chaos that time surrounded us with. Cottagecore has become so attractive because it’s a way of focusing on ourselves and what brings us joy. Are you trying to create a Cottagecore house that feels like a romantic sanctuary but you have no idea where to start?
Paint Walls in Neutral Shades
It can be fun to collect fixtures that fit your vision and style. There is nothing quite like a cozy bathroom or kitchen that is fitted with working and authentic fixtures. One of the styles of the cottagecore trend is decorating with flowers or plants. While working with fresh flower designs has always remained popular, using dried flowers for decoration produces a different spin.
Include Vintage Light Fixtures
Books are a must have for any cottagecore home aiming to be reminiscent of a fairytale or nostalgic rural life. Use your book collection to elevate your cottage style by arranging books on shelves, in small collections, and on your tabletops. You might also include decorative details that feature books like painting, framed pages, and even textile prints. In keeping with the maximalist styling of the cottagecore aesthetic, try creating a collection of ceramics.
Include White Painted Furniture
Unlikely cottagecore converts include David Beckham, who filmed himself on YouTube building a wooden beehive in a V-neck, and Kanye West, whose Instagram documents his rural ranch-life idyll in Wyoming. And while the activities and aesthetics that cottagecore embraces are wide-ranging and complex, covering everything from fashion to gardening, cooking to frolicking, so too are its origins. It’s in part a reaction against capitalism and our increasing time spent in front of a screen, but also related to ongoing interests in wellness and sustainability, and more broadly the idea of social consciousness. If you have a rug that fits your home’s color palette already, then great.
Bring the outdoors indoors by placing farm-inspired paintings around the home. Twelve on Main provided ways to produce a farm aesthetic without seeming out of place. Make a large scale farm painting the focal point in a living room by leaving the rest of the walls bare and incorporating neutral colored furniture. Smaller farm paintings can be grouped together on a wall to create a sense of cohesion.
Cottagecore is a cultural movement which idolises the concept of a simple, self-sufficient life. Capturing a yearning for a life that is more rural and idyllic, it taps into a desire to be at one with nature, and to live in a world outside of the one currently inhabited. Different cottages throughout history and worldwide have been inspired by the pastoral aesthetic. Here are some interior design ideas to help you make your cottagecore dreams come to fruition.
Style a Handmade Pillow
Candles, fairy lights, and dimmed lamps can create that Hygge atmosphere that makes your Cottagecore home so special. Reading nooks are one of the most popular ways to incorporate a cozy corner that also inspires passers-by to take a seat, pick up one of the many books that litter the walls and floor, and dive into a new world. Inspired by the imperfections of nature, your home should emulate the disorganized beauty of the wild outdoors. There is nothing quite as Cottagecore as walking into a home that smells of freshly baked bread. In fact, it can lift your Cottagecore to new heights by introducing interest in every corner of your home.
How to Do "Cottagecore" in Paris - Messy Nessy Chic
Wooden furniture, ideally reclaimed, recycled or simply reused, floral wallpapers, country scents, fairy lights, layers and layers of floral prints, embroidery, hand made trinkets, cozy bedrooms for a personal sanctuary. A cottagecore house can be a little bohemian, a little messy, a little raggedy at the edges. Choose bold wallpaper with bright colors and complex patterns. Floral wallpaper is one of the most popular choices for cottagecore design. Floral patterns, in general, are a large part of cottagecore designs, so marrying floral patterns with bold wallpaper can make a room feel extremely cozy and rural.
Use Soft Complimentary Colors
You can also look through antique stores or estate sales to find those special touches that will transform a space. Below, we're showcasing 34 beautiful, welcoming cottagecore bedrooms that feature vintage pieces, natural elements such as plants and fresh blooms, patchwork quilts, and more. There's no finer example of this feeling — aesthetic, rather — than cottagecore, where the ease of rural life is brought to life with fresh florals, botanical accents and vintage-inspired decor.
During this time, rural areas were idyllic settings ripped out of the pages of a historical novel. Antique furniture is a great way to instantly add a cottage feel to a space. Old wood furniture is the perfect way to add some rustic flair to your cottagecore vision. You can find antique beds, headboards, tables, chairs, cabinets, and more. Each piece of antique furniture should complement the space, and it should be functional.
People desire a sense of comfort and self-reliance where they can peacefully live and rest. According to Life on Summerhill, the cottagecore aesthetic romanticizes nature and escapism, throwing us back to a simpler and more idyllic time. Though many linens seen in the cottagecore aesthetic are neutral or light in shade, other bedding elements are often full of color and prints. Vintage style quilts fit seamlessly into a cottage styled bedroom and create a nostalgic and comforting atmosphere for a master suit, nursery, or guest room.
This print is perfect for cottagecore and gives a "teatime" feel, adding a sense of daintiness to the room. However, if you want to go in a bolder direction, go fiery with red flower printed bedsheets, or stick with sunny yellow motifs to bring some "sunshine" to the bedroom. Add special touches like artwork, faux or real flowers, and decorative pillows. Though pinks and blues are commonplace in home and room designs, lilac is steadily becoming more contemporary and used.
Try a traditional desk style with a decorative side chair. Mix and match wood and painted materials and place your desk near a window. A bit of fun upholstery on your chair will complete this cottagecore vignette. Cottagecore is a branch of the maximalist style, but the foundations of the aesthetic are very simple. Embrace this style juxtaposition by using a neutral color scheme throughout your cottage home. With neutral walls, your vibrant cottage style decor will be the focus of your design process.
Moss on the roof can be an essential feature of this cottage. But it is smaller and less ranch-like than other farmhouse homes. You want to use local decorative elements inspired by a fairy tale lifestyle. Remember, with cottagecore it is important to create a space where you feel the most comfortable. Whether you choose to completely renovate a room or light a sage candle, make sure to make the space your own and you won’t go wrong in achieving the cottagecore aesthetic. They're fancier, come with decorative lids or corks, and are growing in popularity thanks to the growing cottagecore trend.
Spaces are supposed to be filled with things, but these things don’t have to be worthless or arbitrary. Cottagecore gives you the power to display your knick knacks in a way that enhances the design space. Use curio cabinets to show off your collection of doodads and trinkets. Fill your window sills with small objects that are meaningful to you.
Here's everything you need to know about Norovirus -- and how to avoid getting sick on your next cruise vacation. Based on the math, you have less chance of catching a gastrointestinal illness on a ship than at many places you're likely to visit on land. Cruise lines employ crews dedicated to keeping public areas and high-touch surfaces clean. Galley crews and waiters receive extensive training on food safety and handling. Moreover, the cruise industry often finds itself under scrutiny following an outbreak, which can affect the public’s perception and willingness to book cruises, ultimately impacting the industry’s bottom line.
How to prevent seasickness on cruise ships (tips)
In 2015, Zika virus reached Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. Obviously, the first thing is to go to the ship's infirmary (medical center) and contact the doctor. You should drink plenty of water as dehydration is a side-effect of the illness.

Cruise illness issues often result in lower booking rates and cheaper prices - which is bad for the business. If you hear CODE RED, it means that there is a serious outbreak of illness on the ship. In 2023, the cruise ship most affected by norovirus was Enchantment of the Seas, with a back-to-back cruise suffering from breakouts. For the most part, Norovirus outbreaks are the results of passengers setting sail sick ... As part of the program, ships are required to adhere to stringent health and safety protocols that dictate everything from the cleaning of high-touch areas to how food is stored in freezers, refrigerators and galleys.
How to Avoid Getting Norovirus on Cruise Ships - Health.com
The worst outbreak of norovirus on a cruise ship occurred onboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas in January 2014. On this 10-night cruise, 534 out of 3071 (20.6%) passengers or crew reported being ill. That means data for norovirus on cruise ships is more readily available than for other entities. It's easy to make norovirus case numbers sound alarming, but context matters. For example, 100 cases on a single ship might seem like a lot, but on a vessel like Oasis of the Seas, which carries more than 5,400 passengers, 100 cases are only about 2% of the onboard population.
The symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal cramps. The illness lasts 1 to 4 days, but some people (especially elderly) may be contagious for up to 2 weeks after recovery. Norovirus on ships is spread through contaminated water, foods and surfaces (public restrooms, railings, doorknobs, handles, board games-cards-puzzles-toys, etc). Norovirus withstands chlorine, prolonged exposure outside the body, as well as temperature extremes. Like a virus, Norwalk can't be effectively treated with antibiotics, making it extremely difficult to eliminate in closed environments - like cruise vessels.
Norovirus Clusters Known to Cause Stomach Flu Are Resistant to Environmental Stresses and UV Disinfection
Passengers who experience norovirus symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea should notify staff and follow recommended precautions, per the CDC. According to the CDC, the most common settings for norovirus outbreaks are health care facilities, restaurants or catered events, schools, day cares and, of course, cruise ships. Norovirus is caught by having contact with an infected person, either directly, or by touching contaminated surfaces. Norovirus outbreaks can occur on cruise ships when people bring the virus onto the ship and pass it on to others.
However, unlike on land, most basic travel insurance policies don't cover medical treatments on cruise ships as they are not from the patient's primary caregiver. Purchasing cruise travel insurance with health coverage (medical clauses) is highly recommended. An "illness outbreak" is considered when 3% or more of all passengers report symptoms to the ship's med staff. In such cases, the CDC requires cruise lines to file a medical report. The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program records outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships.
The Worst Norovirus Outbreak On A Cruise Ship
When Norovirus outbreaks can't be contained, cruise lines might also pull the ship out of service for a few days for sanitizing. Here are listed latest cruise ship Norovirus outbreaks on passenger ships, with information what is and how to avoid Norovirus on cruise ships, CDC reports, and news updates. Norovirus is a common and contagious illness that can affect people on cruise ships as well as on land. This article includes statistics about the prevalence of norovirus on cruise ships, as well as giving helpful information on how to prevent norovirus on your cruise. Norovirus is the most common of several viruses that cause severe gastrointestinal illness or acute gastroenteritis.
Monkeypox Outbreak: “This Is an Entirely New Spread of the Disease”
Together, we can work towards ensuring that cruise ships remain a place of relaxation and enjoyment, rather than a breeding ground for this troublesome virus. In all, about 1,700 people reported being sick with norovirus aboard a cruise ship between January and June of this year. Norovirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis and foodborne illness.
2024 Is Already Shaping Up to Be the Year of Cruise Ship Norovirus Cases - Matador Network
2024 Is Already Shaping Up to Be the Year of Cruise Ship Norovirus Cases.
Norovirus outbreaks spiked on cruise ships this year, with data showing more outbreaks happened between January and June than over the course of any other full calendar year in the last decade. Thirteen norovirus outbreaks have been reported on cruises so far in 2023, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which keeps a record of annual case counts dating back to 1994. There have currently been 13 norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships in 2023. The most recent outbreak occurred on a Viking Cruises ship, which traveled from Iceland and docked in New York City. About 13% of its passengers and several crew members became ill with the virus while on board.
Common symptoms are cold sweat, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea. When such symptoms are noticed, passengers should take precautions to prevent intensifying the disorientation. During the onboard illness outbreak, VSP requires the cruise company to activate the "Outbreak Prevention and Response Plan" (vessel's response to illness cases). VSP doesn't charge fees for consultations related to shipping facilities renovations or new ships. If these measures are notsuccessful in halting the spread of the diseases, in rare cases, it is possiblefor all passengers to be confined to certain areas of the ship, or to theircabins, or even for the cruise to end early. Your freshly-washed hands are only clean until you touch something, so you should avoid touching surfaces that are regularly touched by other people.
While last summer's departures offered generous elbow room for passengers, this year tells a different story. Cruise lines reported occupancy levels surpassing 100% in the first quarter of 2023, indicating a significant rebound. According to the CDC, 110 of 838 passengers and nine of the 455 crew members reported feeling ill during the trip. You can get norovirus illness many times in your life because there are many different types of noroviruses and one type may not protect you against the others.
MSC World Europa will carry 5,079 passengers (at full occupancy) and will boast 22 decks, immediately becoming the longest, tallest and largest ship in the entire fleet. The ship launches in December 2022 and is earmarked to sail in the Arabian Gulf. Families will be excited by the ship's new Wonder Playscape, an underwater-themed area for kids that will include slides, climbing walls, views and an interactive mural. Finally, a new cantilevered pool bar, called The Vue, will offer fantastic sunning opportunities during the day and turn into a colorful outdoor venue after sunset. While the Explora Journeys brand is new, it has plenty of maritime heritage - centuries of it, in fact. The new line is part of MSC, the family-owned cruise and shipping giant that traces its legacy all the way back to 1675.

However, they're not the only major new cruise vessels arriving during the next 12 months. It's just one of two major new cruise ships arriving in 2023 that has a tie-in to MSC Cruises. As we wrote about in our recent first look at Silver Nova, part of what makes this new outward-facing orientation for these ships so magical is that they don't have any structures rising from the starboard sides of their pool decks. Passengers floating in the pools on these ships or lounging on nearby lounge chairs get an unobstructed view of the sea off the starboard side. The ship will offer 15 different places to grab a bite, more than double the number on the line's other ships.

Coming in November 2023, Seven Seas Grandeur will have its version of the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite, and the line is already stating that the ship will have the highest space and crew ratio per passenger in the industry. The first ship in the luxury Silversea fleet to have all balconies, Silver Nova will debut in summer 2023. With 728 passengers, Silver Nova will be the biggest ship for Silversea and also have the line's first hybrid technology; the goal is to be totally emissions free in port. Carnival Jubilee is sailing seven-night voyages to the Western Caribbean out of Galveston. The trendy, adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages is debuting its third ship, the 2,770-passenger Resilient Lady, in May 2023 in the Mediterranean.
Like its sister, its interiors are filled with a far broader array of suites than you'd find on earlier Carnival ships. New features include two ocean-themed zones with new bar and dining options — including an underwater-themed bar adorned with octopus arms that will serve drinks. The Retreat on top is reserved for suite guests and has its own restaurant, lounge, and multi-level sundeck with pool. The watery offerings include an Aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate virtual reality technology. Because a large percentage of the new cruise ships arriving in 2023 belong to an existing class and therefore have a familiar look, cruise fans might not find this year's new arrivals to be as exciting as last year's debuts. Perhaps the most notable new cruise ship of 2023 will be MSC World Europa, the first of a new series of megaships from MSC Cruises that is designed to go head-to-head with Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class ships.

Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues. On April 25, Norwegian Pearl will also cross the Atlantic from New York, arriving in Southampton on May 9.
Following the Explora I, the Explora II is set to become Explora Journey’s second ultra-luxury ship. Under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 922-guest will kick off its inaugural season in the Mediterranean on August 11, 2024. After seeing its delivery postponed in 2023, the Brilliant Lady is now expected to enter service for Virgin Voyages in the second quarter of 2024. Details about the vessel’s new inaugural season, however, haven’t been announced by the company yet. All in all, there will be more than 40 different dining and drinking venues on the ship, including 10 free dining options and 11 specialty dining options. Icon of the Seas isn’t the only Royal Caribbean ship slated to hit the waters in 2024.
The ship’s Piazza is surrounded by domed glass and takes its inspiration from historic piazzas, offering access to a range of luxurious venues. The Horizons Dining Room is now three stories tall, and other dining options on the ship will include both new and classic Princes Cruises favorites. But enough gushing — what can you expect from this year’s batch of new cruise ships? Among the most notable of these smaller vessels is the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena, which is being billed as the first major river ship designed to sail on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Avalon's new entry for 2024, the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria, will be that line's first vessel on the Douro River in Portugal. Even the smallest cabins on Silver Ray will measure at least 357 square feet, which is unusually large for a cruise ship cabin.

The best Alaska cruise ports are also the most crowded because no matter which type of itinerary and cruise line you select, you'll likely visit a mix of the same ports. The immediate port area will be filled with tourist shops and eateries. If you want to see nature at its finest, you must book a tour or venture farther afield.

Generally, these one-way sailings travel from Seward or Whittier (the cruise ports closest to Anchorage) to Vancouver (or vice versa). Most itineraries are seven nights, but you'll find a handful that are longer. Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage. Nearly every major cruise line has a presence in Alaska from May through mid-September, with some offering sailings as early as April or as late as October.

Alaska cruises offer a wide range of activities in port, with options for active travelers, wildlife lovers, history buffs and shoppers. Please advise, the location is private to ensure the safety of the parking meeting location for the duration of the day and only those who purchase tickets will receive the address. Scenic cruising
It's so far from the rest of the mainland U.S. that it's become a bucket list destination, especially for travelers looking to visit each of the 50 states. Cruisetours range from nine to 18 days and include a one-, two- or three-day visit to Denali National Park. Select Cruisetours also include a journey into the wilds of Canada’s Yukon.
These cruises are best suited to travelers who love days at sea. You'll have up to two days of scenic cruising, in addition to sailing the Inside Passage. Because Gulf of Alaska cruises sail farther north, scenic destinations might include College Fjord, in addition to Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.
If it's marine life you've come to see, you'll find it in abundance, from whales and dolphins to sea lions and harbor seals. On land, you'll likely spy bears and Dall sheep while eagles, puffins and a host of seabirds circle above. Alaska might be one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it's rugged and can be tricky to get around. Explore the Last Frontier by cruise ship, and you can travel to gold rush towns, glaciers, Alaska Native heritage sites and natural areas brimming with wildlife in comfort, even luxury. These ships often feature complimentary shore excursions, kayaks and bikes for guest use and onboard scientists and naturalists. Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. Most big-ship and luxury cruise lines send at least one cruise ship to Alaska every summer.
Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you might visit Seward and the Kenai Peninsula, Alyeska, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Fairbanks — as well as spend one to three nights in Denali National Park. Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this). Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think. Holland America Line is debuting a new “Killer Whale Pale Ale” on all Alaska cruises.
Note that moose don't regularly show up in the Inside Passage; you'll need to head farther north to find them. You can also find one-way repositioning cruises between Southern California ports (Los Angeles and San Diego) and Vancouver at the beginning or end of a ship's Alaska cruise season. The Inside Passage is the most popular Alaska cruise route. Weeklong itineraries generally embark in either Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia — though some itineraries originate in Juneau. A few lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line, offer 10-night Inside Passage cruises from Seattle or Vancouver.
